American Statesmen
Sunday, July 24, 2005 to Saturday, July 30, 2005
Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio

Even though the powers of the American Executive are controlled and limited, extraordinary acts of statesmanship are possible. This seminar examines those presidents who have demonstrated extraordinary political leadership. We will examine such statesmen and the political circumstances in which their prudence revealed itself. Among those examined will be Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt.

Instructors: Sidney M. Milkis is James Hart Chair of politics at the University of Virginia. He is the author or co-author of Presidential Greatness, The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2002, The President and the Parties, and American Government: Balancing Rights and Democracy. Marc Landy is professor of political science at Boston College and is co-author of Presidential Greatness and American Government: Balancing Rights and Democracy.
