Religion in American History and Politics

From the time that the first Europeans arrived in America, religion has been an important part of American life. This course examines the various ways in which religion has played a role in American history, with particular emphasis on the role of religion in American politics.

Instructors: Ken Masugi is a member of the Advanced Academic Programs faculty in the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. He is the co-author of Democracy in California: Politics and Government in the Golden State, the editor of Interpreting Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", and co-editor of five other books on American political thought. David Tucker is Associate Professor of Defense Analysis and Co-Director of the Center on Terrorism and Irregular Warfare at the Naval Postgraduate School. He has published on Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and is the co-author of United States Special Operations Forces.
