Lincoln and the Civil War
Instructor: Lucas E. Morel
Saturday, March 7, 1998

10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Founders Seminar Room, Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio

This seminar will examine the major political issues that caused the Civil War. Special emphasis will be given to the debates regarding the expansion of slavery, particularily on the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, the Dred Scott decision of 1857, the Lincoln-Douglass Debates of 1858, and the presidential election of 1860.

Although the battle of the war itself will not be considered, detailed attention will be given to the meaning of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, and Second Inaugural Address.

Lucas Morel is a Professor of Political Science at John Brown University.
